Community-Based Initiatives Toward Human-Ecological Balance
The API Community Regional Project
The API Community commits itself to activities that are critical for the region, cross-disciplinary in nature,trans-border in scope, and multi-level in approach, recognizing the interlinkageof locality, nation, and region. It aims to foster a greater regional consciousness by promoting relationships among cultures, by initiating orendorsing collaborative activities, and confronting public issues with discernment, integrity, and commitment.
One such compelling issue is the current global environmental crisis, requiring an urgent response. In many ways, environmental conservation in Asia has been thwarted by the lack of understanding in the local and sociocultural Contexts of conservation. Mainstream interventions often go against the grain of local wisdom or genus loci (spirit of the place). As a result, instead of being empowered as custodians, primary stakeholders of the natural habitat have ended up being marginalized in the process.
Promoting a holistic approach, the API Community recognizes the sociocultural contexts of environmental dilemmas. Scientists and environmentalists alone cannot solve them, nor the fragmented and sometimes competing interests of governments, the business sector and NGOs.
